Nasal Irrigation And Other Natural Treatments

Airborne irritants, allergens and nasal congestion can all be removed by performing nasal irrigation. An isotonic or hypertonic saline solution is administered to the sinuses using a squeeze bottle, neti pot or other similar device. Isotonic solutions have the same salt concentration level as the human body whereas hypertonic solutions have a higher salt concentration than exists in the human body. Where nasal congestion is extreme, hypertonic solutions may be more useful at drawing moisture from the sinuses and relieving congestion. Sinus irrigation improves the drainage mechanism within the nasal passages (cillary function).

Unfortunately nasal irrigation does have it's drawbacks. Particularly stubborn infections do not respond to this treatment. Some people find that the mucus membrane lining their sinuses is irritated by hypertonic solutions. It does not reduce the level of histamine released during an allergy response, therefore it is not always effective at relieving the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and hay fever. It does not provide immediate relief from sinus pain, pressure, headaches etc. The process can be awkward, takes time to carry out and many people don't like it . It also usually has to be carried out in the home and it therefores lacks convenience.

These alternative natural treatments are all excellent and have helped many sinusitis and allergy sufferers.

All natural nasal sprays - SinuSoothe, Sinus Buster and Sinol are fine examples of a natural nasal sprays that are effective and completely safe. They are recommended by doctors and even used by them to treat their own sinus conditions. Short term they provide instant relief from nasal congestion, sinus pain, sinus headaches, runny nose etc. due to their anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine properties etc. Long term SinuSoothe is extremely effective at killing bacterial and fungal infections and they all desensitizes the nasal passages to allergens. The ingredients have been clinically proven to be effective and are non addictive. Sinusitis, hay fever, allergy, rhinitis and cold sufferers all use these natural nasal sprays. They are also used by nasal spray addicts to replace their offending nasal spray.

Natural anti-histamines - Allergies would benefit from these. Quercetin and butterbur can be just as effective as OTC anti-histamines but without their side effects. Your local health food store should be able to advise you on these and others. It usually takes about 4 weeks for these to start taking effect.

Boosting immune system - Eating a balanced diet and supplementing with good quality vitamins etc. will improve immune system function and your ability to fight infection. Vitamin C, vitamin B complex, garlic and a multi-vitamin & mineral would help boost your immune system. A strong immune system and taking vitamins also helps allergy sufferers reduce their allergic response. Your local health food store should be able to advise you.

Reduce the inflammatory response - Since sinusitis and sinus allergies symptoms are caused by inflammation, it follows that by reducing inflammation you will reduce the symptoms. You could take Ibuprofen etc. but these are not intended for daily use. A far better option is to take natural anti-inflammatories which are just as effective but don't cause the nasty side effects. Turmeric, omega oils etc. can all be taken daily and you will be pleasantly surprised at how well they work.

Nose gels - These can be applied to the inner lining of the nostrils and are effective at trapping pollen, dander etc. before they get in to the nasal passages.

Please consult a physician before using new treatments.
